In Conversation with Kate Waterhouse

Life Stories

Journalist, TV presenter and mother of two, Kate Waterhouse has long been admired for her effortless approach to balancing career, family and wellbeing. Together with her husband, former NRL player Luke Ricketson, Kate recently completed the renovation of their Sydney home, a beautiful, light-filled space featured in Vogue Living that feels both refined and deeply restorative for family life.

As part of the renovation, Kate incorporated a Sunlighten mPulse® Conquer Intelligent Sauna with PulseIQ™ into the home, creating a dedicated space to support recovery, relaxation and long-term wellbeing. Here, she shares how wellness fits into her busy lifestyle, the role infrared therapy plays in her routine and why investing in health at home has become more important than ever.

You’re constantly on the go across work, events and family life, what does “wellness” look like for you in this season of life?

For me, wellness is less about perfection and more about balance. Life is very busy between work commitments, travel, school runs and family life, so I try to focus on small daily rituals that help me feel energised, calm and present. It’s about moving my body, getting enough sleep, eating well where I can and also creating moments to slow down and recharge mentally.

What prompted you to get a Sunlighten infrared sauna into your home?

When we renovated our home, I really wanted to create spaces that felt calm, restorative and supportive of wellbeing. I’d used infrared saunas before and always loved how I felt afterwards, both physically and mentally. Having a Sunlighten sauna at home makes it easy to incorporate into my routine consistently, even with a busy schedule.

I also love that it incorporates red light therapy, which was a huge drawcard for me. I’m very focused on recovery and overall wellbeing, but I also love the skin benefits. I genuinely notice my skin looks more refreshed and glowing when I’m using it regularly.

You’ve mentioned using your sauna post-workout, what role does sauna play in your recovery and overall performance routine?

I love using it after a workout because it helps me unwind and recover properly. It’s become part of my recovery ritual. I find it helps ease muscle tension, encourages me to slow down after exercise and gives me a dedicated moment to reset.

The red light therapy is another big benefit for me, especially for recovery, circulation and reducing inflammation. Even 20 or 30 minutes can make such a difference to how I feel afterwards, both physically and mentally.

Beyond the physical benefits, have you noticed any shifts in how you manage normal life stressors, prioritise self-care or improve your quality of sleep since incorporating regular infrared sauna sessions?

Definitely. I think one of the biggest changes has been mentally. It forces me to pause, put my phone away and properly switch off for a moment, which is something we rarely do these days.

I’ve found it really helps me decompress, especially after hectic work weeks or travel, and I do notice I sleep better and feel calmer when I’m using it consistently. It’s become one of those rituals that benefits both mind and body.

Your beautiful home renovation is now complete, how important was it for you to create a space that supports wellbeing within your home?

It was incredibly important. Our home is busy with two children, a dog and always people coming and going, so I wanted it to feel warm, relaxed and functional, but also like a sanctuary.

We focused on creating open, light-filled spaces that felt calming and easy to live in. Adding elements that support wellbeing, like the sauna and outdoor areas, was a big part of that vision.

There’s a strong focus right now on longevity and feeling good long-term, how are you thinking about investing in your health for the future?

I’m much more conscious now of investing in habits that support long-term health rather than quick fixes. For me, that’s prioritising sleep, movement, recovery, stress management and taking care of myself consistently, even in simple ways.

I want to feel healthy, energised and strong not just now, but for many years to come.
