The move from ceramic heaters...

Up until the year 2001, ceramic based heaters were used in infrared saunas around the world. In 1999, Sunlighten began marketing wooden infrared sauna cabins using Ceramic Quantum Wave heaters - the largest heaters on the market.

Sunlighten realised in order to produce the far-infrared wavelength, you would need a heater that was large enough to work at much lower temperatures. The general physics law (Wein’s Law of Displacement) states that a large surface area, equals a lower surface temperature which then produces the long far- infrared frequency.

The small, hot bar heaters were getting too hot to sustain this longer frequency, therefore, users were not receiving the deeper sweat associated with the far-infrared wavelength.

Introducing the World's First Carbon Technology...

In 2001, Sunlighten introduced the world’s FIRST carbon heater – Solocarbon®. This break through carbon technology would become the foundation of Sunlighten’s success. It broke the mould by combining high far-infrared emissivity with the largest surface area.

This revolution by Sunlighten was originally met with angst from other industry providers. To prove the faith that Sunlighten had in their product, tests and studies were performed by independent testing bodies. A clinical study in 2001 showed a rise in core body temperature while in 2004, independent scientific testing was performed proving Sunlighten’s Solocarbon heaters emitted 95% far-infrared.

Since Sunlighten introduced Solocarbon, other carbon heaters (copies) started to flood the market. These were mass produced, untested and still emitted extreme high surface temperatures.
